Taking Care When Planting Tulips

It is without doubt that tulips are one of the most popular flowers in the world. They can be grown in almost all kinds of climatic conditions. Many people plant them in their gardens while others are comfortable putting them in rooms. They are very dependable and available in brilliant colorful shades. On the whole perspective, they are internationally recognized as classical and yet elegant spring bulbs. However, planting tulips is a very delicate process. Some people make silly mistakes that can be avoided when planting tulips. Remember that it is essential to have good knowledge of tulips gardening. This knowledge is very helpful when it comes to taking care of tulips.

Gardening Tips:

  • Some people inter-crop other plants with tulips. This is not a bad gardening idea but they should remember that there some fundamental things to consider when it comes to planting tulips. If you are comfortable inter-cropping, it is advisable to start planting other bedding plants before you plant the tulips. This is a god idea because there tulip bulbs will not be damaged.
  • Remember to give enough bulb space/room when you are planting tulips. You can be at risk of losing these beautiful flowers because there bulbs will not compete against each other for the resources (water and mineral salts). The overcrowded bulbs also give your garden an unpleasant look. If there is overcrowding, dig up the bulbs and break them down into smaller parts. Be sure to do this before the foliages have died down. Replant these smaller bulbs in other places of the garden.
  • Tulips are truly remarkable flowers. Apart from having the capability of growing virtually anywhere, they are also disease resistant. However, they are susceptible to tulip fire. This is a very serious condition that affects every part of the tulip. It causes adverse effects on the leaves and stems leaving them stunted and deformed. In the long run there will be numerous unpleasant brown patches on the plants. If your tulips are infected, the only solution would be to destroy the bulbs.
  • Planting tulips encompasses the flowering process. This is a very integral part in the tulip cycle. Some people might decide to deadhead the tulips. This is not a bad thing but it is advisable to let the leaves wither naturally. Similarly, if you are worried about the facade of the fading tulips, you can always braid the leaves.
  • Make a practice of watering the tulips. Some people go to the extent of adding sugar to the water to enhance the longevity of the tulips.

Planting time:

Generally, it is a good idea to start planting tulips during the late fall and preferably before the frost time. There are also other notable months for planting tulips. November and October are highly recommended months for planting tulips. In relation to this, remember that growing tulips in pots is only a short term gardening option. Albeit they make brilliant flowers, they only last for about a week in a pot. Furthermore, it is always advisable to use sandy soil when you are growing tulips in containers.
